LED lamps offer long service life and high energy efficiency, but initial costs are higher than those of fluorescent and incandescent lamps. To use them on AC power they are operated with internal or external rectifier circuits that provide a regulated current output at low voltage. LEDs are degraded or damaged by operating at high temperatures, so LED lamps typically include heat dissipation elements such as heat sinks and cooling fins. Compared to fluorescent bulbs or compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), the main advantages cited for LED bulbs are that they contain no mercury and turn on instantly. Furthermore, their life does not get reduced by switching on and off, which makes them suitable for light fixtures which are frequently turned on and off. LED light bulbs are also mechanically robust whereas most other artificial light sources are fragile. LED sources are compact, which gives flexibility in designing lighting fixtures and good control over the distribution of light with small reflectors or lenses. LED lamps have no glass tubes to break, and their internal parts are rigidly supported, making them resistant to vibration and impact. With proper driver electronics design, an LED lamp can be made dimmable over a wide range; there is no minimum current needed to sustain lamp operation. They will attract less bugs as they have no UV rays and emit no heat. The quality of white light is excellent and clear and lasts over time. The come in a vast array of types, sizes, purposes, colours and shapes. The size and power saving capabilities allow LED's to be used almost anywhere, in new innovative ways and different applications. They reduce cooling costs as they emit very little heat and are safe to the touch or accidental fires. Changing to just one single LED bulb keeps half a tonne of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere through it's life cycle.
