There are many private, regional and national reserves in our area. For the outdoor adventurist abseiling, micro lighting, hang-gliding, ballooning, paragliding, river rafting, hiking, mountain biking, and horse riding, just to mention a few, are also offered. Our region is known for its excellent sporting events such as the Sasol Rally, Jock Cycle Tour, Jock Marathon & Daisy Mountain Bike Challenge. For the golf enthusiast, there are many well-known courses in the area. Mbombela (formerly known as Nelspruit) is the perfect base from which to experience the area through day-drives, or organized tours. Major shopping centres like Ilanga Mall and Riverside Mall are within easy reach from the city centre. Besides the gold discovered in the area, what also makes Barberton unique, is the fact that it is surrounded by some of the oldest mountains in the world, the Makhonjwa Mountains. White River was originally established in 1904 as an irrigation farming scheme for unemployed British soldiers returning from the war. Casterbridge Farm, just outside White River, is home to Barnyard Theatre, Casterbridge Cinema (our art circuit), and exhibitions of some of our best craftsman and artists. Swaziland, home to one of the three monarchies left in Africa, is a mere hours drive from us and well worth a visit. The local arts and crafts markets throughout Swaziland is a firm favourite with tourists. Despite being the smallest country in the Southern hemisphere, Swaziland more than makes up for its lack of size with a hugely diverse range of attractions and activities. As one of the few remaining Executive Monarchies in Africa, culture and heritage are deeply engrained in all aspects of Swazi life, ensuring an unforgettable experience for all who visit. As well as the rich culture, the overwhelming friendliness of the people makes all visitors feel truly welcome and very safe. Add to that a stunning landscapes of mountains and valleys, forests and plains; plus wildlife reserves across the country that are home to The Big Five, and you have all that’s best about Africa in one small but perfectly formed and welcoming country.
