Our vision is to secure free ranging African Rhinocerous in protected sanctuaries across Africa, to ensure the survival of the species for furture generations. The mission of Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary is to rescue every rhino that is orphaned, to heal them and to provide a totally secure environment where they can grow, roam free, and breed to ensure that there will always be rhinos in Africa. Due to the limited level of poaching at the time, only a few rhinos were treated at the centre. Subsequent to moving to its new property, there was a drastic increase in the number of rhino poaching incidents in the surrounding areas, and an ensuing need to care and rehabilitate for the injured and/or orphaned rhinos, whose mothers were killed during such incidents, became apparent. Ultimately, it is the goal of the sanctuary to aid in the process of re-maximizing the rhino population with the intention of preserving the species for future genertations. Despite intense counter poaching efforts, rhinos continue to be poached at unprecedented levels throughout South Africa. Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary NPC is developing a concise strategy to ensure the safety and security of the rhinos under the centres care, and is committed to maintaining the highest level of protection. Rhino horn cannot be legally sold on the international market. The international trade in rhino horn was banned in 1976 by signatories to the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). Unfortunately, a flourishing black market trade has led to widespread rhino poaching. The biggest rhino orphanage and sanctuary in the world Rescue, rehabilitation, release. Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary has a dedicated helicopter to track, find and secure any orphaned rhino. The air rescue team is supported by a highly qualified veterinary team and ground support vehicles that transport the rhino to the holding facilities at Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary. Our state of the art holding facilities house the rhinos during the early stages of their rehabilitation and care process where they are integrated with the other rhinos and are able to form crashes and unique bonds. They receive the highest standard of care, feed and veterinary support during this process thus ensuring full rehabilitation. A highly qualified security team consisting of rhino monitors, canine units, mounted units, and an armed reaction unit are permanently on duty to ensure their security. Care For Wild Rhino Sanctuary is located on a beautiful game reserve in the heartland of Mpumalanga, South Africa, where we’ve set up a treatment and care centre where we can tend to injured or orphaned animals until they are well enough to be rehabilitated into the wild. Petronel Nieuwoudt, the founder of Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary NPC, is one of the few people worldwide who has specialised in the care of orphaned and injured rhinos, and her passion is truly inspiring. Our mission is to save black and white rhinos from extinction. We are committed to rescue abandoned, injured, and orphaned rhinos and to rehabilitate them wherever possible. We enlist the help of veterinarians, nutritionists, ecologists, and other specialists, to ensure the successful rehabilitation and release of these animals. Over the years, Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary has grown to be the largest rhino sanctuary and orphanage in the world.
